# IBKR API Order Precaution Error – Fix for Errors 354 and 163

**Last Updated:** August 19, 2026 | **Published:** August 19, 2026

If your PickMyTrade entry order and its **SL/TP bracket orders are created successfully in IBKR TWS but remain “Untransmitted,”** the orders will not be sent to IBKR for execution. PickMyTrade may subsequently report messages such as **“Entry order Cancelled”** or **“Order was discarded.”**

![IBKR API Order Precaution Error – Fix for Errors 354 and 163](https://docs.pickmytrade.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-83-1024x109.avif)

This behavior can occur when IBKR’s **API Order Precautionary Settings** prevent the order from being transmitted, particularly when the account does not have market data for the instrument or the order triggers IBKR’s price-percentage precaution.

The following guide explains how to check and update the relevant IBKR TWS setting so that API orders can be transmitted normally.

## Issue

The IBKR account is receiving API order warnings/errors including:

- **Error 354:** Order submitted without market data for the instrument.
- **Error 163:** Order price exceeds the configured percentage constraint, such as the **3%** limit.

These messages are related to **IBKR TWS API Order Precaution settings**. IBKR documentation confirms that these precautions can block or interrupt API order submission.

## Customer Fix

Please update the following setting in Trader Workstation (TWS):

**TWS → Global Configuration → API → Precautions**

Then enable:

**“Bypass Order Precautions for API orders”**

![IBKR TWS Global Configuration API Precautions screen showing the ‘Bypass Order Precautions for API Orders’ option enabled.](https://docs.pickmytrade.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-82.avif)

After enabling this option, restart/reconnect the trading application if necessary and test the order again.

IBKR specifically documents this setting as the option that allows API orders from third-party software to bypass TWS order precautions.

## Why This Fix Is Required

IBKR’s precautionary settings are designed as safety checks for orders submitted through the API. When an API order triggers one of these checks, TWS can return a warning instead of allowing the order to proceed automatically.

For **Error 163**, IBKR describes the issue as the order price violating the percentage constraint configured in the Order Precautionary Settings of TWS or IB Gateway.

IBKR also documents the specific API precaution option:

> **Bypass Order Precautions for API orders**

This setting is located under **Global Configuration → API → Precautions**.

## Important Note About Market Data

The Error 354 message can look like a market-data subscription problem. However, in this case the relevant issue is the **TWS API precaution**, not necessarily a requirement to purchase market data.

IBKR confirms that the TWS precaution can generate the warning when an API order is submitted without market data, and that the precaution can be bypassed using the setting above.

## Account / TWS-Specific Setting

The precaution is configured in the customer’s **TWS/IB Gateway environment**, so it should be checked on the installation that is actually connected to the affected live account.

If TWS is using a new or different profile/installation, the setting should be verified again.

## Recommended Steps

1. Open **Trader Workstation (TWS)**.
2. Go to **Global Configuration**.
3. Select **API**.
4. Open **Precautions**.
5. Enable **“Bypass Order Precautions for API orders.”**
6. Save/apply the setting.
7. Reconnect the trading application if required.
8. Test the order again.
